Powder Her Face is based on a sex scandal that caused the Duchess of Argyll, a notorious libertine salon figure, to fall out of favor with British high society in 1963. In the opera, Duchess Margaret Campbell looks back on her more than turbulent life.

“How about a 'pipe aria'? Starts with words, ends with humming.” With these words, librettist Philip Hensher brought a notorious scandal to the attention of Thomas Adès. Powder Her Face.

Powder Her Face is gebaseerd op een seksschandaal waardoor de hertogin van Argyll, een beruchte libertijnse salonfiguur, in 1963 in ongenade viel bij de Britse high society. In de opera kijkt Hertogin Margaret Campbell terug op haar meer dan turbulente leven.

“Wat zou je denken van een ’pijp-aria’? Begint met woorden, eindigt met geneurie.” Met deze woorden bracht librettist Philip Hensher een berucht schandaal onder de aandacht van Thomas Adès. Powder Her Face.
