Shocking ! Que Don Juan compte dans son catalogue 1003 maîtresses rien qu’en Espagne passe encore, mais que Margaret Campbell, duchesse d’Argyll, ait eu 88 amants, voilà qui était un peu too much pour la bonne société britannique de 1963. Révélée à la presse à scandales d’Outre-Manche, l’affaire fit des gorges aussi chaudes que profondes : on exhuma la collection de Polaroid de la dame, comprenant quelques rangs de perles et l’image troublante d’une fellation offerte à un « homme sans tête ». Un scandale ne venant jamais seul, l’opéra que le compositeur Thomas Adès consacra à l’affaire devait aussi choquer l’opinion : devenu célèbre pour la description musicale de cette ducale gâterie, Powder her Face fut considéré comme « non adapté à une retransmission » par la radio anglaise…

Mais on aurait tort de ne voir ici qu’une envie de choquer. Sollicité par d’aussi augustes maisons que le Royal Opera House, la BBC, ou le Carnegie Hall de New York, Thomas Adès convoque ici ensemble les audaces d’Alban Berg et de Stravinsky, la fougue des musiciens de tango, la gouaille du cabaret et la verve de la comédie musicale, au service d’une partition sensuelle et surprenante, et d’un livret qui raconte avant tout la décadence d’une classe et d’une époque.

Revealed at the tabloid press from across the Channel, the case caused a stir as hot as it was deep: the lady's Polaroid collection was unearthed, including a few rows of pearls and the disturbing image of fellatio offered to a "man without head ". A scandal never comes alone, the opera that the composer Thomas Adès devoted to the affair was also to shock public opinion: having become famous for the musical description of this ducal treat, Powder her Face was considered "not suitable for broadcast by English radio…

But it would be wrong to see here only a desire to shock. Solicited by such august houses as the Royal Opera House, the BBC, or Carnegie Hall in New York, Thomas Adès brings together here the audacity of Alban Berg and Stravinsky, the ardor of tango musicians, the banter of cabaret and the liveliness of musical comedy, in the service of a sensual and surprising score, and a libretto which above all recounts the decadence of a class and an era.

Die Oper des Komponisten Thomas Adès dreht sich um die skandalumwitterte Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll, um ihre zahlreichen Liebesaffären und Scheidungen, an die sie sich als ältere, in einem Hotel lebende Dame zurückerinnert. Eine bissige Gesellschaftssatire über Amoral und Dekadenz der upper class und den Voyeurismus der Öffentlichkeit.
