But Kunigunde is already promised to the Augsburg councillor Eoban Hesse, whom Steffen favours as his son-in-law. The rivals compete against each other in a singing contest. Despite popular favour, Sachs is defeated and driven out of the city. But the emperor, who appreciates poetry, is fed verses by Sachs. Can Sachs win his Kunigunde after all? Lortzing and Leipzig have plenty of common ground. Not only did he compose his »Zar und Zimmermann« here, but he also appeared on stage as an actor and singer.
