«Парсифаль» – грандиозная опера-мистерия Рихарда Вагнера, его «последняя карта», итог его творческих, нравственных и религиозно-философских поисков. Тридцать семь лет (больше половины жизни) понадобилось композитору, прежде чем замысел оперы по средневековой поэме Вольфрама фон Эшенбаха превратился в законченное творение, предложенное восхищенной публике в 1882 году в Доме торжественных представлений – собственном театре Вагнера в Байройте. «Парсифаль» – нечто большее, чем опера, чем даже вагнеровская «музыкальная драма»: это «торжественная сценическая мистерия», произведение на грани светского и религиозного искусства. С самого начала оперу окружал ореол таинственности, подогреваемый тридцатилетним запретом на ее исполнение где бы то ни было, кроме Байройта, – во избежание профанации ее религиозно-мистического содержания. Задача, которую ставил себе Вагнер в «Парсифале», амбициозна даже для байройтского мастера: он стремился создать совершенное «произведение искусства будущего» по принципу синтеза, сливая воедино театр и храм, музыку и слово, мотивы христианские и буддистские, сюжеты из далекого Средневековья и актуальные проблемы человечества.
«Парсифаль» – история о том, как один человек может спасти другого и тем самым спастись. Как из состояния полного отчуждения и равнодушия к чужой жизни и чужой боли человек может перейти в состояние тотальной эмпатии, когда чья-то боль переживается словно своя и этим берется на себя. Как такая сострадательность спасает из ловушки эгоизма и делает из простеца мудреца.
«Парсифаль» всегда вызывал споры – и тем он интересен сегодня. Снова и снова ломаются копья в дискуссиях о влиянии «Парсифаля» на немецкий нацизм. Не утихают споры о том, в каких темпах он должен звучать, составляются таблицы продолжительности разных интерпретаций, насколько большим должен быть хор и насколько уместно изображение церковных таинств на сцене. Вагнерианцы здесь всегда найдут о чем поговорить с антивагнерианцами. По сей день появление «Парсифаля» на любой афише в любой точке мира – это всегда экстраординарное событие; он по силам только лучшим оперным труппам. Его музыка – не просто «зрелый» вагнеровский стиль с бесконечной мелодией, оркестровой мощью и гармониями, которые, как говорил Ницше, способны «завораживать спинной мозг». Это новая и последняя вершина творческого пути Вагнера, когда лейтмотивы не громоздятся так сильно, как в «Кольце нибелунга», когда яснее оркестровое письмо и певцы могут не конкурировать с оркестром, а наслаждаться взаимодействием с его инструментами.
В России «Парсифаля» можно увидеть и услышать только в Мариинском театре. Его поставили здесь впервые в 1997 году при участии английского кинорежиссера Тони Палмера и в 2018-м – в обновленном виде – вернули на сцену, пополнив мариинскую вагнериану одним из ключевых творений великого композитора-мифотворца. Parsifal is a monumental opera-mystery by Richard Wagner, the last card the composer ever played, the final step of his creative, moral, religious, and philosophical quest. It took the composer 37 years (more than half of his life) to turn Wolfram von Eschenbach’s medieval poem into a finished opera, which premiered to the delight of the public at the Festspielhaus (Wagner’s own opera house in Bayreuth) in 1882. Parsifal is something bigger than an opera, bigger even than Wagner’s “music drama.” It is a “festive stage mystery,” a work balancing on the edge between secular and religious art. Since the very beginning, the opera was shrouded in mystery fueled by a 30-year ban to perform it outside of Bayreuth to avoid any possible profanation of its religious and mystical content. Wagner’s ambitions for Parsifal were impressive even for the Bayreuth composer: he intended to create a perfect “art-work of the future” based on the principle of synthesis and to fuse together theatre and religion, music and lyrics, Christian and Buddhist themes, stories from the bygone Middle Ages and the most topical issues of his day.
Parsifal is a story about how one person can save another’s life and thus save himself. How one can abandon absolute indifference and neglect of another’s life and pain in favour of complete and total empathy when you feel another man’s pain like your own pain. This kind of compassion saves you from the trap of selfishness and turns a fool into a wise man.
Parsifal has always been controversial and that is why it is still interesting today. A lot has been said about Parsifal’s influence on Nazism in Germany. Discussions are still ongoing about what tempo to use; tables are being drawn to measure the length of Parsifal’s various versions; size of the chorus is being debated, as well as how appropriate it is to portray religious rites on stage. Wagnerians will always have something to discuss with anti-Wagnerians. To this day, the appearance of Parsifal on any playbill in the world is an extraordinary event; only the best opera companies can tackle this challenge. Music in Parsifal is not just an example of “mature” Wagner style with its endless melody, orchestral strength and instruments that, as Nietzsche put it, “charm the spinal marrow.” It was the last highlight of Wagner’s creative path when leitmotifs are not as prominent as in Der Ring des Nibelungen, when orchestral writing is clearer and singers do not compete with the orchestra, but rather enjoy the interaction with its instruments.
In Russia, Parsifal can only be seen and heard at the Mariinsky Theatre. It was first staged here in 1997 with the participation of the British film director Tony Palmer. And now its updated version returns to the Mariinsky Theatre, thus adding one of the key works of the great composer and mythmaker to the theatre’s Wagner collection. Khristina Batyushina
