1939. Au pied du Lincoln Memorial à Washington, D.C., la contralto afro-américaine Marian Anderson chante devant une foule immense. C’est là que se rencontrent David et Delia. Lui est un physicien juif allemand émigré. Elle est une jeune afro-américaine née à Philadelphie, douée d’une voix sublime. Très rapidement, leur passion commune pour la musique se transforme en histoire d’amour. Le couple a trois enfants : Jonah, un ténor talentueux, Joey, un pianiste et Ruth, une activiste luttant contre la ségrégation. Cette famille mixte confrontée aux préjugés raciaux de la société est aussi unie que divisée par la musique... 

Sacré « Best World Premiere » aux International Opera Awards après sa création en 2021, The Time of Our Singing est de retour à la Monnaie. L’opéra du compositeur belge Kris Defoort, adapté du roman éponyme de Richard Powers, ouvre un espace imaginaire où se croisent la petite et la grande histoire, où les destins individuels s’entremêlent, où le jazz et la musique classique s’enrichissent mutuellement. Rarement un opéra n’a été à ce point ancré dans le présent, tout en abordant autant de thèmes universels, comme la famille, la justice sociale et le pouvoir unificateur de la musique.

1939. African-American contralto Marian Anderson delivers her legendary performance before a huge crowd at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. This is where David Strom and Delia Daley meet. He is an immigrant German-Jewish physicist. She is a young, Philadelphia-born African-American woman with a sublime voice. Their shared passion for music soon develops into a love affair and, ultimately, a warm family. Their three children have different destinies: Jonah will become a talented tenor, Joey a pianist, and Ruth an activist fighting against segregation. Their shared story, however, is that of a mixed family both united and divided by music in the turbulence of post-war America. 

Crowned ‘Best World Premiere’ at the International Opera Awards after its premiere in 2021, The Time of Our Singing returns to La Monnaie. In collaboration with librettist Peter van Kraaij, conductor Kwamé Ryan and director Ted Huffman, Kris Defoort conjures an imaginary space where History with a capital H and history with a small h intertwine, where people come together to weave a story, and where jazz and classical music enrich one another. Rarely has a contemporary opera been so profoundly rooted in the now while raising so many universal themes.

1939. Aan de voet van het Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. zingt de zwarte Amerikaanse alt Marian Anderson voor een enorme mensenmassa. Tijdens dit legendarische concert lopen David Strom en Delia Daley elkaar tegen het lijf. Hij is een geëmigreerde Duits-Joodse natuurkundige; zij een jonge zwarte Amerikaanse uit Philadelphia met een sublieme stem. Uit hun gedeelde passie voor muziek ontstaat een liefdesverhaal en uiteindelijk ook een warme familie met drie kinderen: Jonah, die zal uitgroeien tot een getalenteerde tenor, Joey, een pianist, en Ruth, die als activiste strijd zal voeren tegen de segregatie. Hun kroniek is die van een gemengd gezin dat in het veelbewogen naoorlogse Amerika verbonden en uit elkaar gedreven wordt door de muziek. 

The Time of Our Singing, naar de gelijknamige roman van Richard Powers, werd na zijn creatie in 2021 op de International Opera Awards uitgeroepen tot “Best World Premiere” en keert nu terug naar de Munt. De Belgische componist Kris Defoort opent in zijn magnum opus een imaginaire plek waar de grote en de kleine geschiedenis elkaar vinden, waar mensen samenkomen en een verhaal vertellen, waar jazz en klassieke muziek elkaar verrijken. Zelden wist een hedendaagse opera zich zo te verankeren in het nu en toch zoveel universele thema’s aan te kaarten.
