Maître absolu de l’opérette sous le Second Empire, Offenbach consacre les derniers mois de sa vie à la composition de l’œuvre la plus ambitieuse de sa carrière : un opéra aussi émouvant que divertissant, dans lequel le rire n’enlève rien au tragique ni à la beauté. Il compose ce tour de force musical sur un livret tout aussi magistral, réunissant pas moins de trois histoires dans la même histoire, avec pour protagoniste l’écrivain (et musicien) E. T. A. Hoffmann, devenu le héros de ses propres contes fantastiques qui ont tant marqué l’imaginaire romantique. Avec la complicité du chef Pierre Dumoussaud, Lotte de Beer revisite ce grand classique et signe une plongée vertigineuse dans la psyché et les fantasmes d’un artiste en lutte avec ses démons intérieurs.

Absolute master of operetta under the Second Empire, Offenbach devoted the last months of his life to the composition of the most ambitious work of his career: an opera as moving as it is entertaining, in which laughter takes nothing away from the tragedy. nor to beauty.
