For many people, New Year's Eve is a very special day of the year: on the one hand, one recaps what has been experienced and perhaps even takes stock, on the other hand, one looks to the future full of hope. What surprises and changes will the new year have in store? Love is often one of the longings that many wish to have fulfilled these days.

That's why the festive New Year's Eve gala 2020/21 is dedicated to this theme: "Quanto amore!" - "How much love!" Adina marvels in Gaetano Donizetti's wonderful opera buffa L'elisir d'amore. Because the hopelessly romantic Nemorino can't afford a love potion for his beloved, he enlists as a soldier in order to be solvent again. Love is probably the linchpin of most operas, and that's no wonder: butterflies in the stomach, burning passion or intense jealousy - it is associated with great feelings that are just waiting to be set into music. All great composers have been inspired by it and show with their versatile works how broad the spectrum of love is. Georges Bizet's hot-blooded Carmen, the protagonist of the opera of the same name, turns two men's heads at once and thereby plunges himself into misfortune. The cunning Casanova Don Giovanni in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's demonic opera doesn't even get that far:

In Camille Saint-Saën's highly dramatic opera Samson et Dalila , love becomes a surefire weapon in the struggle for faith and power. The Philistine Delilah seduces the devotee Samson with every trick in the book and thus robs him of his extraordinary power. Finally, Giuseppe Verdi's unhappy protagonist Violetta Valéry has a split relationship to love in the famous opera La traviata : As a courtesan, she lives a deceptive life full of lavish parties and love for sale - and ultimately has to perish because of her true feelings ...
