The name of Feliks Nowowiejski is practically forgotten now, even though in his time he was an important composer whose work was performed on leading world stages. After its premiere in Amsterdam in 1909, the monumental spiritual cantata Quo Vadis was performed in more than 150 cities both in Europe and in North and South America, bringing Nowowiejski international fame. The text is based on the novel of the same name by his Polish compatriot, Henryk Sienkiewicz, which tells the story of the life of the first Christians and the cruelty of the Roman Empire during the reign of Emperor Nero. An important fact is that Leoš Janáček highly respected Felix Nowowiejski, he approached him as a judge of composition competitions, and wanted to perform Quo Vadis himself in Brno in 1910. He took charge of the production as both choirmaster and conductor. However, all his efforts were in vain, as Janáček was not able to put together an orchestra that could handle the demanding score. With this concert, we would like to draw attention to Janáček´s very positive attitude towards Poland – at one point he even considered accepting the post of director of the Warsaw Conservatory. At the same time, after many years, we are fulfilling Janáček´s dream to get this monumental work of Nowowiejski’s heard in Brno.

Jméno Felikse Nowowiejského je dnes prakticky zapomenuto, ač byl ve své době významnou skladatelskou osobností, jejíž dílo se hrálo na předních světových jevištích. Monumentální duchovní kantáta Quo vadis z roku 1909 byla bezprostředně po premiéře v Amsterdamu v roce 1909 provedena ve více než 150 městech v Evropě a Severní a Jižní Americe, a zajistila tak Nowowiejskému mezinárodní proslulost. Text vychází ze stejnojmenného románu polského krajana Henryka Sienkiewicze vyprávějícího o životě prvních křesťanů a krutosti římského impéria za vlády císaře Nera. Důležitou skutečností je, že Leoš Janáček si Felikse Nowowiejského velice vážil, oslovoval jej jako posuzovatele skladatelských soutěží a Quo vadis chtěl v Brně v roce 1910 uvést. Sám se nastudování ujal jako sbormistr i jako dirigent. Veškerá snaha však vyšla vniveč, jelikož Janáček nebyl schopen sestavit takový orchestr, který by náročnou partituru zvládl. Tímto koncertem chceme připomenout Janáčkův velmi pozitivní vztah k Polsku – uvažoval dokonce o přijetí postu ředitele varšavské konzervatoře. Zároveň po mnoha letech vyplňujeme Janáčkův sen, aby v Brně zaznělo toto Nowowiejského monumentální dílo.

Feliks Nowowiejski ist heute so gut wie vergessen, obgleich er zu seiner Zeit als ein bedeutender Komponist galt, dessen Werke auf den renommiertesten Bühnen der Welt zur Aufführung kamen. Die monumentale geistliche Kantate Quo vadis aus dem Jahr 1909 wurde unmittelbar nach ihrer Amsterdamer Premiere in mehr als 150 Städten in Europa, Nord- und Südamerika aufgeführt und machte Nowowiejski international bekannt. Der Text entstammt dem gleichnamigen Roman seines polnischen Landsmanns Henryk Sienkiewicz und erzählt vom Leben der ersten Christen und der Grausamkeit des römischen Imperiums unter Kaiser Nero. Ein wichtiges Detail ist, dass Leoš Janáček Feliks Nowowiejski sehr schätzte, ihn mehrfach als Jurymitglied von Komponierwettbewerben kontaktierte und Quo vadis im Jahr 1910 in Brno aufführen wollte. Die Einstudierung übernahm er selbst als Chorleiter wie als Dirigent. Doch blieben alle Bemühungen am Ende fruchtlos, da es Janáček nicht gelingen wollte, ein Orchester zusammenzustellen, das der anspruchsvollen Partitur gewachsen gewesen wäre. Mit diesem Konzert möchten wir an Janáčeks sehr positive Beziehung zu Polen erinnern – er erwog sogar, den Posten des Direktors des Warschauer Konservatoriums anzunehmen. Gleichzeitig erfüllen wir nach vielen Jahrzehnten Janáčeks Traum, dass dieses Monumentalwerk Nowowiejskis in Brno erklingen möge.
