In the recital, which the soprano Anne Preuss and the pianist Markus Zugeh devote to Scandinavian and Russian composers on the threshold from the Romantic to the modern, the gaze is directed towards the north and the east. Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) was still firmly attached to the romantic tradition. His elegant combination of Norwegian folklore sounds with advanced harmonies was a great role model for subsequent composers. The most famous Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) was already actively trying to modernize the music by expanding the tonality, but without abandoning the late romantic and home-related musical language as radically as the twelve-tone speakers with absolute atonality were doing at the same time. Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) also saw himself exposed to constant criticism of his tonal compositional style, while he himself could not relate to the advancing fashion towards atonality and certainly did not take his reputation, which had been shaped by critics, as the last of the Romantics as an insult. Rachmaninoff was therefore unable to share the general admiration for his progressive colleague Alexander Skriabin, instead he admired his close friend Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951), whom he considered to be one of the greatest composers of the time - after all, Medtner also rejected the all too modern tendencies of the early 20th century and earned the nickname of a Russian Brahms by sticking to the German-Russian-Romantic tradition. The deep love of romantic euphony, the wealth of melodies oriented towards the respective folklore and the home-related sphere sounds of their songs, in which singing and piano merge with each other, connect these four composers with each other. With great devotion, Anne Preuss and Markus Zugeh spread out a carpet of sound with the songs of Grieg, Sibelius, Rachmaninoff and Medtner and invite the audience to float together through the landscapes of Norway, Finland and Russia.

Gen Norden und Osten richtet sich der Blick in dem Liederabend, den die Sopranistin Anne Preuß und der Pianist Markus Zugehör skandinavischen und russischen Komponisten an der Schwelle von der Romantik zur Moderne widmen. Noch ganz der romantischen Tradition verhaftet war Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), der durch seine elegante Verbindung norwegischer Folkloreklänge mit fortschrittlicher Harmonik nachfolgenden Komponisten ein großes Vorbild war. Der berühmteste finnische Komponist Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) bemühte sich bereits aktiv um eine Modernisierung der Musik durch Erweiterung der Tonalität, ohne jedoch die spätromantische und heimatbezogene Musiksprache so radikal zu verlassen, wie es zeitgleich die Zwölftöner mit der absoluten Atonalität durchsetzten. Auch Sergei Rachmaninow (1873-1943) sah sich ständiger Kritik an seinem tonalen Kompositionsstil ausgesetzt, während er selbst mit der fortschreitenden Mode hin zur Atonalität nichts anfangen konnte und seinen von Kritikern geprägten Ruf als letzten Romantiker sicher nicht als Beleidigung auffasste. Die allgemeine Bewunderung für seinen fortschrittsbeflissenen Kollegen Alexander Skrijabin konnte Rachmaninow darum nicht teilen, stattdessen verehrte er seinen engen Freund Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951), den er für einen der größten Komponisten der Zeit hielt – schließlich lehnte auch Medtner die allzu modernen Tendenzen des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts ab und brachte sich durch sein Festhalten an der deutsch-russisch-romantischen Tradition den Spitznamen eines russischen Brahms ein. Die innige Liebe zum romantischen Wohlklang, der an der jeweiligen Folklore orientierte Melodienreichtum und die heimatbezogenen Sphärenklänge ihrer Lieder, in denen Gesang und Klavier miteinander verschmelzen, verbinden diese vier Komponisten miteinander. Mit viel Hingabe breiten Anne Preuß und Markus Zugehör mit den Liedern Griegs, Sibelius', Rachmaninows und Medtners einen Klangteppich aus und laden die Zuschauer ein, gemeinsam darauf durch die Landschaften Norwegens, Finnlands und Russlands zu schweben.
