Marié par l’abbé, et futur cardinal, Charles Mermillod dans la modeste église de Collonges-sous-Salève en 1859 aux portes de Genève, Giuseppe Verdi n’en était pas moins incrédule au grand regret de son épouse, la cantatrice Giuseppina Strepponi. La religion est bien sûr présente dans plusieurs de ses opéras, mais c’est la mort de Rossini qui allait déclencher le processus créateur de son Requiem créé en double hommage au compositeur défunt et au poète Alessandro Manzoni, l’immortel auteur de I Promessi Sposi (Les Fiancés). On a beaucoup glosé sur l’aspect théâtral et spectaculaire de l’œuvre évoquant le drame de l’homme en face de la mort. Libéré d’un quelconque livret à respecter, Verdi se lâche dans cette œuvre splendide où son imagination musicale s’enflamme. Sa parfaite connaissance de la voix humaine est mise au service d’une expression intense et sincère dans toute sa pureté. Les ensembles et l’écriture pour le chœur sont particulièrement soignés. À la fois grandiose et intime, le Requiem de Verdi est avant tout pétri d’humanité.

Married by the abbot, and future cardinal, Charles Mermillod in the modest church of Collonges-sous-Salève in 1859 at the gates of Geneva, Giuseppe Verdi was nonetheless a nonbeliever to the great regret of his wife, the singer Giuseppina Strepponi. Religion is of course present in several of his operas, but it was Rossini's death that was to trigger the creative process of his Requiem, created as a double homage to the deceased composer and to the poet Alessandro Manzoni, the immortal author of I Promessi sposi (The Betrothed). Much has been said about the theatrical and spectacular aspect of the work evoking the drama of man in the face of death. Freed from any libretto to respect, Verdi lets loose in this splendid work where his musical imagination ignites. His perfect knowledge of the human voice is put to the service of an intense and sincere expression in all its purity. The ensembles and the writing for the choir are particularly meticulous. Both grandiose and intimate, Verdi's Requiem is above all steeped in humanity.
