Rigoletto
Tatjana Gürbaca's staging of Giuseppe Verdi's classic Rigolettois one of the most successful productions by Andreas Homoki's artistic director. The director doesn't need much more than a long table to tell the story of the court jester Rigoletto and his locked up daughter Gilda in all its facets and abysses and to accentuate the sharp social criticism inherent in the play. The court of Mantua is a depraved society of men who indulge in humiliation and amusement out of boredom. It is a world that is morally shattered and no longer knows any values: to have fun here means to humiliate and humiliate the other, and the court jester Rigoletto is the most cynical joker of all. The only bright spot in this dark night piece is Rigoletto's daughter Gilda - a sincere lover who prefers to sacrifice herself, instead of letting go of their ideals of life. Her longing for freedom and self-determination is greater than the oppressive authority of her father and the mendacity of society.

The Hawaiian baritone Quinn Kelsey sings Rigoletto at all the major opera houses in the world. With the Zurich premiere of Tatjana Gürbaca's production ten years ago, his international success began with this role, and he keeps returning to the Zurich Opera House for her (and other great Verdi roles). The Gilda at his side is our ensemble member Sandra Hamaoui.
