Rigoletto is the first opera in what later became known as Verdi's "Popular Trilogy", completed in 1853 with Il trovatore and La Traviata , with which the composer "opened up new perspectives for the genre, reached its artistic maturity and achieved unrivaled renown", as defined by Santiago Giordano in his program notes at sunset 2019.

This drama that combines passion, deception and revenge was a hit from the night of its opening and became in one of the most performed operas in theaters around the world. 
Based on Victor Hugo's play, censored at the time, it forced the composer to make an adaptation. It meant a resounding thematic turn that led Verdi from being the catalyst of Italian society, in his early operas, to become much more interested in the psychology of affections and the intimacy of human behavior. The jester Rigoletto is an individual who he moves between love for his innocent daughter Gilda and hatred towards the womanizing Duke of Mantua and the unscrupulous courtiers who support him.

Rigoletto es la primera ópera de lo que más tarde se conoció como la “Trilogía popular” de Verdi, que se completa en 1853 con Il trovatore y La traviata, con la que el compositor “abrió nuevas perspectivas para el género, llegó a su madurez artística y alcanzó un renombre incontrastable”, según lo define Santiago Giordano en sus notas de programa a la puesta de 2019.

Este drama que combina pasión, engaño y venganza fue un éxito desde la noche de su estreno y se transformó en una de las óperas más representadas en teatros de todo el mundo. Basada en la obra teatral de Victor Hugo, censurada en su época, obligó al compositor a una adaptación. Significó un giro temático rotundo que llevó a Verdi de ser el catalizador de la sociedad italiana, en sus óperas tempranas, a interesarse mucho más por la psicología de los afectos y la intimidad de la conducta humana. El bufón Rigoletto es un individuo que se mueve entre el amor por su inocente hija Gilda y el odio hacia el mujeriego Duque de Mantua y los inescrupulosos cortesanos que lo secundan.
