Verdi's opera Rigoletto was written in 1850-1851 and became the most humane and psychologically profound opera of its time. Its plot was taken from Victor Hugo's drama The King Amuses himself in 1832, which was banned by French censors. The librettist Francesco Maria Piave reworked the drama, changed the characters: instead of King Francis I, who could not be shown on stage due to censorship rules, the Duke of Mantua appeared, bearing the surname of a real-life, but extinct family several centuries ago, and instead of the jester Triboulet, a real historical person who served at the court of Francis, there appeared the hunchback Rigoletto (from French rigoler - “laugh”). Verdi and Piave departed from the canons of romantic opera, where it was customary to clearly distinguish between positive and negative characters (not without the possibility of their transformation), and in the end to deduce explicit morality from their collisions. Both heroes and villains were meant to be handsome, while ugliness was allowed only for comic characters. Here Verdi made a hero out of a comic character, opened his inner world to the viewer and, moreover, refused an unambiguous moral assessment of the actions of anyone, from the division into right and wrong. All the heroes of the opera evoke sympathy, each of them is complex, and each one can be understood. The dissolute duke is perfectly charming, somewhat clueless, but not at all angry. The unfortunate Rigoletto loves his daughter immensely, the only treasure and joy of life, but at court he allows himself to evilly ridicule the grief of others, including his father's (and receives a father's curse for this). Gilda, daughter of Rigoletto, a young beauty with a bright and pure soul, transgresses her father's covenant, loses his protection and turns out to be ground by the millstones of a harsh world, for life in which she was clearly not adapted. The killer, Sparafucile, is stern and sinister, but it's just his job. And he, too, is not devoid of human manifestations: in the opera we see how he loves his sister Maddalena.
The Mariinsky performance uses large-scale scenery in dark velvet tones, creating the impression of a volume of space, whether it be a ducal castle or an ominous landscape of a stormy night. Instead of finely designed interiors, large accent objects appear more often - the capital of the column, floor candelabra above human height - which set the space without distracting attention from the actions and feelings of the characters. Все герои оперы вызывают сочувствие, каждый из них сложен, и каждого можно понять. Распутный герцог совершенно очарователен, несколько бестолков, но вовсе не зол. Несчастный Риголетто безмерно любит свою дочь, единственное сокровище и отраду жизни, но при дворе позволяет себе зло высмеивать горе других, в том числе отцовское (и получает за это отцовское проклятие). Джильда, дочь Риголетто, юная красавица со светлой и чистой душой, преступает отцовский завет, лишается его защиты и оказывается перемолота жерновами сурового мира, к жизни в котором явно не была приспособлена. Убийца, Спарафучиле, суров, производит зловещее впечатление, но у него просто такая работа. И он тоже не лишен человеческих проявлений: в опере мы видим, как он любит свою сестру Маддалену.
В мариинском спектакле используются масштабные декорации темных бархатных тонов, создающие впечатление объема пространства, будь то герцогский замок или зловещий пейзаж грозовой ночи. Вместо мелко проработанных интерьеров чаще появляются большие акцентные объекты – капитель колонны, напольные канделябры выше человеческого роста, – которые задают пространство, не отвлекая внимание от действий и чувств персонажей.
