The basis of the opera "Rigoletto" is Victor Hugo's drama "The King Amusing", banned in France by the censors as undermining the authority of the royal authority. Giuseppe Verdi also had to face obstacles. Part of the score had already been written when the censors demanded a radical revision of the libretto. So King Francis I, the main character in Hugo, turned into the Duke of Mantua, the jester Tribule into Rigoletto, and the opera itself, which was originally called "The Curse", got a new one, named after the main character. Verdi was primarily interested in psychological drama. Hugo's text was shortened, the plot became more intimate; emphasis was placed on showing the personal relationships of the heroes in dramatic situations. The composer was offered to replace the hunchback jester with a traditional opera handsome man, but the maestro firmly refused. "A singing hunchback? - wrote Verdi. - Why not? Will it impress? This I do not know; but if I do not know it, neither do those who proposed to change it. I just find it attractive to show this protagonist outwardly ugly, messy and internally passionate, full of love." And although the new interpretation of the play caused a protest from Victor Hugo (due to this, the opera was shown in France only six years after the premiere in Venice), Verdi himself considered the plot of "Rigoletto" to be the best of all he set to music. The score of "Rigoletto" was finished extremely quickly - in forty days. In the plot, a frivolous, pleasure-seeking duke is contrasted with his court jester, whose caustic mask hides a loving and suffering father. Verdi describes the courtiers as sycophants and hypocrites, and Gilda, Rigoletto's daughter, is an example of spiritual purity and devotion. The musical score emphasizes the multifaceted nature of these characters and the depth of their experiences. The opera was first performed on the stage of the La Fenice Theater in Venice on March 11, 1851.
