Premier opéra du musicien conçu lors de son arrivée en terre anglaise et ouvrage réputé pour ses redoutables difficultés vocales, Rinaldo fut le plus grand succès de Haendel de son vivant. Composé à partir d’un livret relatant l’histoire de Renaud et de la magicienne Armide, il connut dès sa création un engouement sans précédent. Ecrit en quatorze jours et réutilisant – comme il en était alors de coutume – des airs d’ouvrages antérieurs, il fut donné sur la scène du Queen’s Theatre, selon de nombreux témoignages, dans une mise en scène extravagante et d’une richesse incroyable, le 24 février 1711. Repris très souvent tout au long de la carrière londonienne du musicien, l’œuvre connut plusieurs remaniements, selon les disponibilités et exigences des interprètes. Le duo Carlo Vistoli en Rinaldo et Emőke Baráth en Armida devrait porter haut l’exigence vocale de ce chef-d’œuvre.

Rinaldo, the first opera composed by the musician on British soil and renowned for its daunting vocal challenges, was Handel’s most successful work during his lifetime. Composed around a libretto telling the story of Rinaldo and the magician Armida, it was an unprecedented hit. Written in fourteen days and incorporating arias from previous works, as was the custom at that time, it was performed on 24 February 1711 at the Queen’s Theatre, with extravagant and incredibly lavish staging, according to a number of eye-witness accounts. It was frequently revived throughout the composer’s London career and was reworked on several occasions to suit the availability and requirements of the performers. The pairing of Carlo Vistoli as Rinaldo and Emőke Baráth as Armida will showcase the vocal demands of this masterpiece.
