Rinaldo was George Frideric Handel's (1685-1759) debut in London. The premiere in 1711 at the Haymarket Theater was a spectacular success and contributed significantly to Handel choosing the British metropolis as his adopted home. No other opera by the composer was performed as often during his lifetime as his first work for the London audience. This is not surprising, as Rinaldo is a special kind of musical and scenic fireworks display and gathers the most beautiful melodic ideas that Handel had put on paper up to this point.

In the battle for Jerusalem, General Goffredo promised his best warrior Rinaldo the hand of his daughter Almirena as a prize. The sorceress Armida, who fights on the side of Argante, ruler of Jerusalem, steals Almirena from Rinaldo's arms. When trying to free his bride, he too is captured. Both of them can defend themselves against the love of Armida or Argante, but only magic can free them and help the Christians to victory.
