Building on the success of his Lucie de Lammermoor in France, Donizetti collaborated again with the Belgian librettist Gustave Vaëz for Rita ou le mari baté , also called Deux hommes et une femme. In this short comedy, reminiscent of Italian buffoon interludes, it is not a question of fighting to obtain the hand of the beloved woman… but of getting rid of it! Rita reigns over her inn with an iron fist, not hesitating to beat her husband Peppe if necessary. When Gasparo, her supposedly dead first husband, enters, the two men enter into an absurd competition in order to leave her as quickly as possible. This is without taking into account the vigilance of Rita, who will remind us that she always has her say. The costumes of Christian Lacroix will sublimate this wildly amusing work.

Fort du succès de sa Lucie de Lammermoor en France, Donizetti collabore à nouveau avec le librettiste belge Gustave Vaëz pour Rita ou le mari battu, aussi appelé Deux hommes et une femme. Dans cette courte comédie, qui rappelle les intermèdes bouffons italiens, il ne s’agit pas de se battre pour obtenir la main de la femme aimée… mais de s’en débarrasser ! Rita règne d’une main de fer sur son auberge, n’hésitant pas à battre son époux Peppe au besoin. Lorsque Gasparo, son premier mari supposé mort, fait son entrée, les deux hommes entrent dans une compétition absurde afin de la quitter le plus vite possible. C’est sans compter la vigilance de Rita, qui rappellera qu’elle a toujours son mot à dire. Les costumes de Christian Lacroix sublimeront cette œuvre follement amusante.
