Bien des compositeurs ont illustré le mythe de Roméo et Juliette, sous la forme de l’opéra (Bellini, Gounod), du ballet (Prokofiev) ou de l’ouverture-fantaisie (Tchaïkovski). Berlioz, lui, a choisi une autre voie : celle de la symphonie, qui lui a permis de « donner à sa fantaisie une latitude que le sens positif des paroles chantées ne lui eût pas laissée, et recourir à la langue instrumentale, langue plus riche, plus variée, moins arrêtée, et, par son vague même, incomparablement plus puissante en pareil cas ». Il n’a cependant pas entièrement renoncé à la voix, qui vient annoncer et commenter l’action évoquée par l’orchestre, et couronne le tout à la manière d’un grand finale d’opéra. Berlioz invente là le prototype de la symphonie dramatique.

Many composers have illustrated the myth of Romeo and Juliet, in the form of opera (Bellini, Gounod), ballet (Prokofiev) or overture-fantasy (Tchaikovsky). Berlioz himself chose another path: that of the symphony, which enabled him to "give his imagination a latitude that the positive meaning of the sung words would not have left him, and to resort to instrumental language, a richer language , more varied, less fixed, and, by its very vagueness, incomparably more powerful in such a case.
