The longing for the other, for the water woman Rusalka this means: living and feeling with a human soul, feeling solid ground under two feet and being loved.
This longing causes Rusalka to enter into a fateful deal with the witch Jezibaba. As a human child, she is allowed to follow the prince she desires, but loses her voice as a result. But without a voice of her own, Rusalka remains an outsider, and it doesn't take long for the prince to turn to another woman...
In the beginning there was an opera text. The Czech poet and dramaturge Jaroslav Kvapil wrote it in 1899 after a holiday on the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm, adapting a fairy tale popular in the 19th century for the big stage. Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904), who by then had already composed eight major operas, used them to create his masterpiece, which continues to delight audiences around the world to this day.
