The plot about the love of a water maiden for an earthly youth, unusually common in the 19th century, is known in literature, painting, and music: it is found in Hoffmann, Pushkin, Dargomyzhsky, Andersen and many other authors. It is symbolic that this series and the whole tradition of romantic musical fairy tales is completed by the opera by Antonin Dvorak, which appeared exactly at the turn of the century: its premiere took place in early 1901.

A classic of Czech music, Dvořák left an extensive legacy both in the symphonic genre and in opera. However, out of ten of his operas, only "Mermaid" has gained worldwide popularity - today it is not without reason considered one of the composer's best works.

The action of the opera unfolds close to a well-known storyline (the similarity with Andersen's fairy tale is especially noticeable): the desire to overcome the border between the world of the spirits of nature and the world of earthly people is expensive and inevitably leads to a sad end. The music of "Mermaid" is one of the pinnacles of Dvorak's lyrics, it is rich in picturesque orchestral scenes and catchy vocal melodies, among which, undoubtedly, the most famous fragment of the opera is the Mermaid's aria "A Month in the Sky" from the first act.

Необычайно распространенный в XIX веке сюжет о любви водяной девы к земному юноше известен и в литературе, и в живописи, и в музыке: он встречается у Гофмана, Пушкина, Даргомыжского, Андерсена и многих других авторов. Символично, что этот ряд и всю традицию романтических музыкальных сказок завершает опера Антонина Дворжака, появившаяся точно на границе веков: ее премьера состоялась в начале 1901 года.

Классик чешской музыки, Дворжак оставил обширное наследие и в симфоническом жанре, и в оперном. Однако из десяти его опер только «Русалка» обрела всемирную популярность – сегодня она не без оснований считается одним из лучших сочинений композитора.

Действие оперы разворачивается близко к хорошо знакомой сюжетной линии (особенно заметно сходство со сказкой Андерсена): стремление преодолеть границу между миром духов природы и миром земных людей обходится дорого и неизбежно ведет к печальному концу. Музыка «Русалки» – одна из вершин лирики Дворжака, она богата живописными оркестровыми картинами и запоминающимися вокальными мелодиями, среди которых, несомненно, самый известный фрагмент оперы – ария Русалки «Месяц на небе» из первого действия.
