He devoted two years to composing his opera “Santa Chiara”, which premiered in 1854 at the Gotha Court Theater under Franz Liszt. In a skilful symbiosis, Italian bel canto merges with German songs, seasoned with the necessary dose of drama. Action and libretto, on the other hand, do not always follow the laws of logic. The subject is based on the story of Tsarevich Alexej, who married Princess Charlotte von Wolfenbüttel in 1710 for political reasons. soon weary of his wife, he tries to get rid of the unloved woman with poison. But the doctor only gives her a sleeping potion. Charlotte manages to flee to Italy, where she is worshiped as Santa Chiara near Naples. A coincidence, the likes of which only happens in opera, also ends up in the same area for the fugitive Alexej. At the sight of those believed dead, he transports himself to the afterlife.
