Arnold Schönberg werd 150 jaar geleden geboren. Dat viert het Concertgebouworkest met een bijzondere uitvoering van zijn Gurre-Lieder. De cantate vormt een kroon op de Laatromantiek, maar wordt vanwege zijn massieve bezetting zelden uitgevoerd. Het Concertgebouworkest voerde het werk in 1921 twee keer uit onder leiding van de componist. Ruim een eeuw later klinkt de grootse en meeslepende cantate onder leiding van eredirigent van het Concertgebouworkest Riccardo Chailly.

Riccardo Chailly zet zich al vele jaren in voor de muziek van Arnold Schönberg en dirigeerde in zijn tijd als chef van het Concertgebouworkest regelmatig diens muziek, maar aan de Gurre-Lieder kwam hij in Amsterdam niet toe. Schönbergs Gurre-Lieder stonden hoog op zijn verlanglijst – vanwege de uitdaging om het enorme uitvoeringsapparaat bij elkaar te houden, maar vooral vanwege de prachtige muzikale details. Op het Deense middeleeuwse kasteel Gurre voltrekt zich een liefdestragedie rondom koning Waldemar en zijn minnares Tove. Onder de vele hoogtepunten zijn het Lied van de Woudduif en de orkestrale verklanking van Waldemars ondode vazallen die rammelend aan hun kettingen door het kasteel stormen.

Arnold Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder
Arnold Schönberg was born 150 years ago. The Concertgebouw Orchestra is celebrating this with a special performance of his Gurre-Lieder . The cantata is a crowning glory of the Late Romantic period, but is rarely performed because of its massive instrumentation. The Concertgebouw Orchestra performed the work twice in 1921 under the direction of the composer. More than a century later, the grand and compelling cantata is conducted by Riccardo Chailly, honorary conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Riccardo Chailly has been committed to the music of Arnold Schönberg for many years and regularly conducted his music in his time as chief of the Concertgebouw Orchestra, but he never got around to Gurre-Lieder in Amsterdam. Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder were high on his wish list – because of the challenge of keeping the enormous performance apparatus together, but above all because of the beautiful musical details. At the Danish medieval castle Gurre, a love tragedy unfolds around King Waldemar and his mistress Tove. Among the many highlights are the Song of the Wood Pigeon and the orchestral rendition of Waldemar's undead vassals as they charge through the castle rattling their chains.
