Publius Cornelius Scipio was praised by ancient historians for the mercy and continence shown after the capture in 209 BC of Nova Carthago (today's Cartagena). A beautiful virgin of noble birth, given to him as a war prey, begged him to return it to her parents and boyfriend. She was granted the only condition of collaborating with him to establish peace between Rome and Carthage. Over the centuries the story became a favorite subject in painting, speech theater and opera. In 1722 two Venetians, the librettist Apostolo Zeno and the composer Antonio Caldara, applied it to their patron, the Emperor Charles VI of Habsburg, presented as heir to the Roman virtues in war and in peace.
