Osvaldo Palli (1921 – 2014) è stato violinista – primo violino dell’Opera Carlo Felice tra gli anni ’70 e ’80 – e compositore. Meditazione è un brano per orchestra d’archi composto nel 1997, un movimento unico, Larghetto, il cui carattere ben si identifica con il titolo. L’elemento della riflessione, dal tono assai malinconico e nostalgico, si ritrova nella ripetizione ossessiva – quasi un lamento – delle quartine dapprima affidate ai violini e poi alle viole. La stessa durata del brano, di circa tre minuti, rimanda alla dimensione di una suggestione sfuggente, che dopo essere stata illuminata da un brevissimo momento di speranza (con una modulazione dalla tonalità di impianto, La minore, a La maggiore) torna alla dinamica ossessiva e malinconica iniziale e quindi svanisce.

Come ben noto, Edvard Grieg si dedicò principalmente alla composizione per pianoforte, suo strumento eletto. Anche la Holberg Suite del 1884 nasce come brano per pianoforte, ed è stata solo in seguito trascritta dal compositore per orchestra d’archi. Il titolo rimanda allo scrittore Ludvig Holberg (1684 – 1754), che ebbe una straordinaria influenza sulla storia del teatro soprattutto nel Nordeuropa. Grieg realizza il suo omaggio ispirandosi allo stile barocco, ovvero quello che in forma letteraria era proprio del drammaturgo norvegese. Ecco dunque motivata la scelta della Suite, con un preludio iniziale e quattro delle danze consacrate dalla tradizione settecentesca: una sarabanda, una gavotta, un’aria e un rigaudon. L’aria, in particolare, riprende il carattere danzante generale ma in una direzione più contemplativa, che rimanda allo stile bachiano.

Quasi coetanea della Holberg Suite, la Serenata op. 48 fu composta nel 1880, risale quindi ad un periodo difficile nella vita privata di Čaikovskij. La Serenata, dedicata all’amico violoncellista e compositore Kostantin Karlovic Albrecht, venne eseguita per la prima volta nel 1881 a San Pietroburgo. In questo momento di significativo turbamento emotivo, il compositore sembra orientarsi verso una ricerca di equilibrio quantomeno nella dimensione creativa, componendo quindi secondo principi quasi accademici e di grande rigore stilistico. Ciò è evidente in primo luogo nella scelta del genere serenata, che nasce classicamente proprio come composizione di carattere leggero e abbastanza disimpegnato, e destinata a contesti esecutivi quali ritrovi all’aria aperta e circostanze festose. La Serenata op. 48 si ispira allo stile di Mozart, che riprende nella scrittura orchestrale, e si articola in quattro movimenti. Oltre alla ben delineata struttura armonica interna, Čaikovskij intesse un sistema di rimandi tra temi soprattutto fra l’iniziale Pezzo in forma di Sonatina e il Finale, a dare un senso circolare alla composizione. Non manca la voce propria del compositore russo, che si percepisce in particolare nel terzo movimento, Elegia, con melodie dalla vena malinconica, e nella spiccata predisposizione per la danza, che emerge a pieno nel Valzer del secondo movimento.

Osvaldo Palli (1921 – 2014) was a violinist – first violin of the Carlo Felice Opera between the 70s and 80s – and composer. Meditazione is a piece for string orchestra composed in 1997, a single movement, Larghetto, whose character is well identified with the title. The element of reflection, with a very melancholic and nostalgic tone, is found in the obsessive repetition - almost a lament - of the quatrains first entrusted to the violins and then to the violas. The very duration of the piece, about three minutes, refers to the dimension of an elusive suggestion, which after being illuminated by a very brief moment of hope (with a modulation from the main key, A minor, to A major) returns to the obsessive dynamic and melancholy at first and then fades away.

As is well known, Edvard Grieg dedicated himself mainly to composition for the piano, his chosen instrument. The Holberg Suite of 1884 also began as a piece for piano, and was only later transcribed by the composer for string orchestra. The title refers to the writer Ludvig Holberg (1684 – 1754), who had an extraordinary influence on the history of theater especially in Northern Europe. Grieg creates his homage by taking inspiration from the baroque style, which in literary form was typical of the Norwegian playwright. This is therefore the reason for the choice of the Suite, with an initial prelude and four of the dances consecrated by the eighteenth-century tradition: a sarabande, a gavotte, an aria and a rigaudon. The aria, in particular, takes up the general dancing character but in a more contemplative direction, which refers to Bach's style.

Almost the same age as the Holberg Suite , the Serenade op. 48 was composed in 1880, and therefore dates back to a difficult period in Tchaikovsky's private life. The Serenade, dedicated to his friend the cellist and composer Kostantin Karlovic Albrecht, was performed for the first time in 1881 in St. Petersburg. In this moment of significant emotional turmoil, the composer seems to be moving towards a search for balance at least in the creative dimension, therefore composing according to almost academic principles and of great stylistic rigor. This is evident first of all in the choice of the serenade genre, which was born classically as a composition of a light and quite disengaged character, and intended for performance contexts such as open-air gatherings and festive circumstances. The Serenade op. 48 is inspired by Mozart's style, which he takes up in the orchestral writing, and is divided into four movements. In addition to the well-defined internal harmonic structure, Tchaikovsky weaves a system of references between themes, especially between the initial Piece in the form of a Sonatina and the Finale, to give a circular sense to the composition. The Russian composer's own voice is not missing, which can be perceived in particular in the third movement, Elegy, with melodies with a melancholic vein, and in the marked predisposition for dance, which fully emerges in the Waltz of the second movement.
