After the resurrection of the Chalet in 2017, which resulted in a critically acclaimed discography, the Toulon Opera once again puts the composer Adolphe Adam in the spotlight. A comic opera inspired by the Orient,  If I Was King is one of Adam's most successful works, which was part of the current repertoire of French opera houses, including that of Toulon, until the 1970s. presented in 1852, a particularly fruitful year for the composer since six theatrical works were created. Despite an extravagant libretto, Adam gives us subtle music, filled with great poetry and intense lyricism

Après la résurrection du Chalet en 2017 qui avait donné lieu à un enregistrement discographique salué par la critique, l’Opéra de Toulon met de nouveau le compositeur Adolphe Adam à l’honneur. Opéra-comique d’inspiration orientalisante, Si j’étais Roi est l’un des ouvrages les plus réussis d’Adam qui a fait partie du répertoire courant des scènes lyriques françaises, dont celle de Toulon, jusque dans les années 70. Il fut présenté en 1852, année particulièrement féconde pour le compositeur puisque six œuvres théâtrales virent le jour. Malgré un livret extravagant, Adam nous livre une musique subtile, emplie d’une grande poésie et d’un lyrisme intense.
