According to Alphonse Karr's short story, the libretto was written by Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti.

The story of the opera takes place in a small seaside village in the south of Italy around 1890. When Silvano is imprisoned for smuggling, his mistress Matilde succumbs to the rich and successful Renz. After Silvan's return, Matilde finds herself in a huge dilemma, because even Renzo does not want to give up on her. Silvano surprises the lovers and his weapon tragically ends their lives. At the symbolic level of the story, the sea plays an important role. The phenomenon that gives and takes, calming and sinister, a symbol of the waves of human passions, their eternity, the infinity of time. The premiere of the opera took place on March 25, 1895 in La Scale, Milan. The state opera presented the work in its Slovak premiere.
