In 1363 the Genoese Doge Simone Boccanegra fell victim to a poison attack. Based on his story, Giuseppe Verdi's opera unfolds into a thriller in which love, family feelings, loyalty and enmity become an inextricable intrigue against the background of a political conspiracy. Philipp Himmelmann returns to the Stadttheater Klagenfurt after almost twenty years with this production, with chief conductor Nicholas Carter taking over the musical direction. The Italian baritone Vittorio Vitelli sings the title role.
After the flop of the premiere in Venice in 1857, Verdi Simon Boccanegra fundamentally reworked it more than twenty years later and led the work to a public success in 1881 at the Milan Scala. The librettist Arrigo Boito, with whom Verdi from then on collaborated intensively, made a particular contribution to this – he also penned the texts for Verdi's late works Otello and Falstaff . Simon Boccanegra culminates in a grandiosely painted utopia of reconciliation and still exerts an irresistible fascination today.
