On January 11, 2009, "Simon Boccanegra", one of Giuseppe Verdi's great operas, was re-staged at the Zurich Opera House. The director Giancarlo del Monaco, together with the set designer Carlo Centolavigna and the costume designer Maria Filippi, placed great emphasis on architecture and color dramaturgy. Carlo Rizzi conducted the score, which is perfect in every respect and shows Verdi at the full height of compositional and stage-dramatic mastery. Unlike in “Aida, for example, where love ultimately plays the central role, the accent in “Simon Boccanegra is entirely on the black sides of power and the sinister political calculations with the title character, Verdi succeeded in one of the most impressive and most nuanced portraits in his entire Create. Leo Nucci sang Simon Boccanegra; Isabel Rey makes her role debut in the role of Maria Boccanegra alias Amelia Grimaldi. Also starring were Roberto Scandiuzzi as Jacobo Fiesco, Fabio Sartori as Gabriele Adorno, Massimo Cavalletti as Paolo Albiani and Giuseppe Scorsin as Pietro. The orchestra of the Zurich Opera is playing.
