Harpagon n’aime que son argent et soupçonne tout le monde de vouloir le lui voler. Pour marier ses deux enfants, il a fait le choix d’une riche veuve pour son fils Cléante et pour sa fille, Élise, du seigneur Anselme, un homme mûr, noble et fort riche. Harpagon est pressé de caser ses enfants pour épouser lui-même une jeune fille pauvre, Marianne, dont la beauté l’a charmé...

Harpagon only loves his money and suspects everyone of wanting to steal it from him. To marry his two children, he made the choice of a rich widow for his son Cléante and for his daughter, Élise, of Lord Anselme, a mature, noble and very rich man. Harpagon is in a hurry to accommodate his children to marry himself a poor young girl, Marianne, whose beauty charmed him ...

The story of the Miser, like all the other great works of Molière, is the story of an unbridled passion, if not mad, which ends up disturbing the social order. Unlike Dom Juan who exists in spending, this is a passion for restriction, return to oneself, restraint, income. Harpagon, for whom all means of fighting death are good, avidly seeks what seems eternal to him - money - and what can breathe new life into him, the youth of Marianne ... Gold, to the evidently, could not satisfy his hunger; outside himself, he could only doom Harpagon to failure and anguish. We say to ourselves that this is an intelligent staging, which does not overly appeal to the vain pleasures of "proofreading", without however depriving itself, here or there, of clever winks to the taste of the day. Benoin follows the classic deal, without adoring him with too many annoying little finds.
