Der 200. Geburtstag von Bedřich Smetana am 2. März 2024 gibt den Münchner Philharmonikern unter der Leitung von Gianandrea Noseda Anlass, das musikalische Schaffen des tschechischen Komponisten einmal genauer zu beleuchten und Werke zu präsentieren, die zu Unrecht im Schatten der unangefochtenen Smetana-Hits wie der Ouvertüre zu »Die verkaufte Braut« und natürlich der »Moldau« stehen: Da wäre z. B. der infernalische Höllentanz aus Smetanas letzter vollendeter Oper »Die Teufelswand«– eines der wirkungsvollsten Glanzstücke des tschechischen Opernrepertoires. Oder die unter dem Einfluss von Franz Liszt entstandene symphonische Dichtung »Wallensteins Lager«, die mit schwungvollen Melodien und effektvollem Einsatz der Schlag- und Blechblasinstrumente das Soldatenleben im Lager des charismatischen Feldherrn porträtiert. Eine musikalische Visitenkarte seiner Heimat schuf Smetana mit seinem Zyklus »Má Vlast« (Mein Vaterland), in dem er der Geschichte, den Mythen und Landschaften seiner Heimat ein klingendes Denkmal setzte.

Hardly any country has been given a comparable musical monument by one of its compatriots. With Smetana’s six tone poems of the Má vlast (My Fatherland) cycle, Gianandrea Noseda presents the Czech Republic’s musical national calling card.

Vyšehrad is dedicated to the legendary ancestral seat of the first Czech rulers and tells of bold heroic deeds of ancient times. Smetana traces the course of the country’s most famous river, the Vltava, telling the legend of the Amazon Šárka and describing Czech country life in From Bohemia’s Woods and Fields. In Tábor, he immortalises the story of the Hussite freedom fighters. Finally, on the legendary Blaník mountain, a hymn-like creed is intoned, evoking the bright future of the Czech nation. On the occasion of Bedřich Smetana’s 200th birthday on 2 March 2024, the Czech nation will be joined by the entire music world in celebrating a national hero.
