The symphonic music concert with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Modestas Pitrėnas features Lithuanian baritone Romanas Kudriašovas, who, in addition to his studies in Lithuania, honed his skills at the National Opera Studio in London, the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, the Wales International Academy of Voice and the Georg Solti Accademia Bel Canto in Italy. He has won prizes and earned recognition in numerous international competitions, including at the finals of the 2nd International Virgilijus Noreika Competition for Singers. Kudriašovas has performed at the Danish National Opera, Opéra National de Lyon, Glyndebourne festival, and other important venues abroad and in Lithuania. Tonight, he performs Austrian composer Gustav Mahler’s songs (imbued with the longing characteristic of the 19th century) set to the delicate poetry of Friedrich Rückert.

The concert programme is complemented by the colourful symphonic canvas Saudade, composed by New York-based Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė, who was awarded Lithuania’s most significant award in 2022 – the Lithuanian National Culture Prize. The opus was composed in 2019 and performed for the first time at the Gaida Festival of Contemporary Music. “It’s incredible how one random word can spark the creative imagination. Sometimes I would come across a mysterious and alluring sounding foreign word with a much wider range of meanings and implications than its equivalent in other languages. When this depth of meaning encoded in the word resonated with personal experiences, it simply called for an embodiment in sound. Saudade in Portuguese means a deep state of emotional nostalgia or melancholic longing for someone/something absent. One possible, but only partial, translation of the word is ‘longing’. Saudade can also be described as a feeling of emptiness, when something (a person or a place or a feeling) is missing at a certain moment, when there is a yearning for being, as opposed to not being. This sensation leads to sadness for the present and joy for the past”, says the composer.
