With the rise of new, urban Black communities both in New York City and abroad, the Harlem Renaissance became the first African American-led movement of international modern arts, including visual art, poetry, jazz, and concert music. Though William Grant Still—considered to be the “Dean of African American Composers”—never lived in Harlem, his close ties and collaborations with the Renaissance's leading cultural figures cemented his place as a frontrunner of the movement.
