According to conductor Hans von Bülow, Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto was 'not a work for the violin, but against the violin'. Headed by chief conductor Kristiina Poska, with violinist Marc Bouchkov, Flanders Symphony Orchestra takes on the challenge of proving that the opposite is true. They combine the lyrical melodies, the moving violin-oboe duets and the exciting Hungarian final movement with the far-too-seldom-performed Exultation from the Elegy by the Late Romantic Flemish composer Lodewijk Mortelmans’. He wrote the work following the death of his wife and two children. You also hear the penetrating notes of Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2. The Finnish composer created this work shortly after his unofficial Finnish national anthem Finlandia in 1902 in Italy. He himself described it as a ‘confession of the soul'. In this 'symphony of independence', the Finnish people heard a protest against Russian rule and adopted the work as a patriotic message from 'a shaman with his magic drum'. For Flanders Symphony Orchestra, it is above all a ‘warm bath of sounds’ and therefore Sibelius' most beautiful work.

Het Vioolconcerto van Johannes Brahms was volgens dirigent Hans von Bülow ‘geen werk vóór de viool, maar tegen de viool’. Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen neemt onder leiding van chef-dirigente Kristiina Poska met violist Marc Bouchkov de uitdaging aan om het tegendeel te bewijzen. Ze combineren de lyrische melodieën, de ontroerende viool-hoboduetten en het opzwepende Hongaarse slotdeel met de veel te weinig gespeelde Hartverheffing uit Elegie van de laatromantische Vlaamse componist Lodewijk Mortelmans. Die schreef dat werk na de dood van zijn vrouw en twee kinderen. Ook hoor je de indringende noten van de Tweede Symfonie van Jean Sibelius. De Finse componist creëerde dit werk kort na zijn officieuze Finse volkslied Finlandia in 1902 in Italië. Hij noemde het zelf een ‘bekentenis van de ziel’. Het Finse volk hoorde in deze ‘symfonie van de onafhankelijkheid’ een protest tegen de Russische overheersing en adopteerde het werk als een patriottische boodschap van ‘een sjamaan met zijn magische trommel’. Voor Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen is het vooral een ‘warm bad van klanken’ en daarom Sibelius' mooiste.

Aux dires du chef d'orchestre Hans von Bülow, le Concerto pour violon de Johannes Brahms est « non pas une œuvre pour violon, mais contre le violon ». Le Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, dirigé par sa cheffe Kristiina Poska et flanqué du violoniste Marc Bouchkov, relève le défi de prouver le contraire. Ces musiciens associent à ses mélodies lyriques, duos poignants du violon et du hautbois et finale hongrois électrisant une composition donnée beaucoup trop rarement. Hartverheffing fait partie d'Elegie de Lodewijk Mortelmans, compositeur flamand du romantisme tardif, qui a écrit l'œuvre après la mort de sa femme et de ses deux enfants. Vous entendez aussi les notes incisives de la Symphonie n° 2 de Jean Sibelius. Le compositeur finlandais a créé l'œuvre en 1902 en Italie, peu après son Finlandia, l'hymne national non officiel du pays. Il appelait l'œuvre « un aveu de l'âme ». Le peuple finnois, qui percevait dans cette « symphonie de l'indépendance » une révolte contre l'occupation russe, l'a adoptée en tant que message « d'un chaman doté d'un tambour magique ». Pour le Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, c'est avant tout « un bain de sonorités chaleureuses », et par conséquent l'œuvre la plus belle de Sibelius.
