The narrator comes out and addresses the audience: “Spectators! Now you will hear "Oedipus Rex" in Latin. In order to save your hearing and memory from unnecessary burden, especially since the opera-oratorio contains only the most important scenes, I will help you gradually remember the tragedy of Sophocles.
Here's how the action unfolds: Thebes is in turmoil. The Sphinx sent a plague on the city. Chorus implores Oedipus to save the city. Oedipus, the winner of the Sphinx, promises to save the townspeople from a new trouble. But he does not realize that he is at the mercy of forces that are usually encountered only on the other side of being. These forces have prepared a trap for him since he was born - you will see how it closes.

Но он не сознает того, что находится во власти сил, с которыми обычно сталкиваются лишь по ту сторону бытия. Эти силы с самого его рождения подготовили ему ловушку – вы увидите, как она захлопнется».
