After a battle, the Sultan Bajazet is a prisoner of the cruel Tatar prince Timur Lenk, known as Tamerlane, "The Lame One". He promises Bajazet freedom if his daughter Asteria would take him as a husband. In order to win her over, he instrumentalizes Prince Andronicus, who is also in love with Asteria. Tamerlanois one of Handel's most successful world premieres in London. The work about love, power and politics turns out to be a real thriller that has lost none of its impact to this day.
