The Canadian director Robert Carsen (*1954) is known all over the world for his well thought-out productions, which update the work without doing violence to it and address the audience directly: "We go to the theater to see ourselves," explains the "Opera's Master of the Modern" (New York Times) and continues, "The sentiments in an opera are thoroughly modern - so to set and stage a play in historical perspective would be abstract and unrealistic."

Opened in 1847, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona is one of the leading opera houses on the international music scene. Numerous famous conductors and singers have performed there since it opened,

"Tannhäuser" is a co-production of the Opéra National de Paris, the Tokyo Opera Nomori and the Gran Teatre del Liceu. "The highlight of the European opera season" reported Deutschlandfunk about the production. Tannhäuser is a painter here, his studio is the Venusberg and the Wartburg is an art gallery. Under the direction of the German Wagner specialist Sebastian Weigle, there is - as usual - an excellent cast of singers on the stage in Barcelona.

Tannhäuser is in the Venusberg, but longs to return to earth. He wants to persuade the goddess of love to let him go. With his words "My salvation rests in Maria" the Venusberg sinks. - Spring at the foot of the Wartburg. The landgrave finds the former knight and minstrel Tannhäuser. Elisabeth has been waiting longingly for him and confesses her great love to him. The singers are supposed to find out about love in a competition. Tannhäuser praises the goddess of love. One recognizes with dismay that he was in the Venusberg; Banishment is his lot. He joins pilgrims moving to Rome.

Elisabeth prays for Tannhäuser's salvation. The pilgrims return without him. Elizabeth is near death. The Pope cursed Tannhauser. He would only be granted salvation if the Pope's staff began to green again. Tannhäuser wants to return to Venus. But the name Elisabeth brings him to his senses. A funeral procession with the dead Elisabeth comes from the Wartburg. Tannhauser dies.
