"A real music festival! Where should you start, where should you end when praising this Tannhäuser at the Berlin State Opera in the Schillertheater? It sounds like you've always dreamed of it, but only too rarely hears it," reported the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper with great enthusiasm. This is mainly due to Barenboim's musical magic: "Richard Wagner's music rises from the orchestra pit with nuance and fine balance." (FAZ), brilliant singers are added. In particular, Peter Seiffert as Tannhäuser celebrates a true "triumph", according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Staged by the choreographer Sasha Waltz on a fantastic stage by Pia Maier Schriever with a circular light tunnel in the manner of Hieronymus Bosch, the Berlin Tannhäuser deserves to be described as "world class" (Süddeutsche Zeitung).

In 1882, Wagner described his fifth opera Tannhäuser as a “romantic grand opera”, but later elevated its status to a “consummate drama”—honoring its epic scale and revolutionary orchestration. Premiered under the composer’s own baton in 1845, the opera blends tradition with innovation by combining mythological elements characteristic of the German Romantische Oper and the medieval setting of many French grand operas. The plot features fantastical protagonists based on the German legends of the medieval Minnesänger Tannhäuser and the Wartburg Song Contest, alongside the folk tale of Venus and her subterranean realm, Venusberg. The opposition of sacred and profane love lies at the heart of this masterpiece, which remains a staple of major opera house repertoire in the 21st century.
