HET NOODLOT DAT PROBEERT TE ONTSNAPPEN

Coriolanus was een Romeinse patriciër die na enkele militaire successen consul probeerde te worden. Toen dat niet lukte, keerde hij zich tegen Rome. Hij sloot een verbond met een vijandig volk en belegerde zijn eigen thuisstad. Op het hoogtepunt van de strijd zond Rome een groep vrouwen naar Coriolanus om te onderhandelen, daaronder ook zijn eigen echtgenote en zijn moeder. In de toneelouverture die Beethoven schreef voor Heinrich Joseph von Collins Coriolanus-tragedie, botst Corionalus’ heerszuchtige karakter met de cantilene-achtige smeekbeden van zijn moeder.

De Belgische pianist Florian Noack houdt ervan het publiek minder gekend werken te presenteren en wordt daarom alom geroemd. In dit concert voert hij het Eerste pianoconcerto uit van de Russische componist Nikolai Medtner, een tijdgenoot en vriend van Rachmaninoff. Net als deze laatste bleef Medtner in woelige tijden trouw aan de westerse klassieke traditie en componeerde virtuoze, hoogromantische composities. Zijn titanische Eerste pianoconcerto, geschreven tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog, is een van Medtners beste werken. Samen met het Belgian National Orchestra onder leiding van Antony Hermus zal Nikolai Medtner dit pianoconcerto aan het einde van dit seizoen ook op cd opnemen.

Tchaikovsky schreef zijn Vijfde symfonie in 1888, op het hoogtepunt van zijn artistieke kunnen. Eén thema – een soort ‘idee fixe’ in navolging van Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique – duikt in alle vier de bewegingen op. Velen interpreteren dit thema als het noodlot, maar “waar in Beethovens Vijfde symfonie het noodlot aan de deur klopt,” aldus een recensent net na de première op: “daar probeert in Tchaikovsky’s Vijfde symfonie het noodlot te ontsnappen”. De eerste beweging begint met een donker andante, gespeeld door de klarinetten. Voordat dit deel in mineur afsluit, duikt er in een geanimeerd allegro echter nog heel wat kinderlijke levensvreugde op. De tragische openingsmaten van de tweede beweging leiden een prachtige hoornmelodie in, die als een zonnestraal plots doorheen het sombere wolkendek breekt. De derde beweging is een wals waarop het noodlot weinig grip krijgt. In de vierde beweging verschijnt het thema terug ten tonele, maar nu in majeur – om dan uiteindelijk te culmineren in een triomfantelijke mars.

LE DESTIN TENTANT DE S’ÉCHAPPER

Fort d’une série de victoires militaires, Coriolan, un patricien romain, décida de briguer le consulat. Ne pouvant l’obtenir, il se retourna contre Rome. Il conclut ainsi une alliance avec un peuple ennemi et assiégea sa propre ville. Au plus fort de la bataille, Rome envoya un groupe de matrones négocier avec Coriolan, dont sa propre épouse et sa mère. Dans son ouverture pour la tragédie Coriolanus de Heinrich Joseph von Collins, Beethoven fait se confronter le caractère tyrannique de Coriolan et les supplications de sa mère aux accents de cantilène.

Le pianiste belge Florian Noack aime présenter au public des oeuvres moins connues, ce qui lui vaut une réelle reconnaissance. Ce soir, il interprète le Concerto n°1 pour piano du compositeur russe Nikolai Medtner, un contemporain et ami de Rachmaninoff. À l’instar de celui-ci, Medtner resta fidèle à la tradition classique occidentale pendant cette période troublée, et composa des oeuvres virtuoses d’un romantisme extrême. Le titanesque Premier Concerto pour piano, composé pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, est l’une des oeuvres majeures de Medtner. À la fin de cette saison, Florian Noack enregistrera sur CD, avec le Belgian National Orchestra dirigé par Antony Hermus, ce concerto de Nikolai Medtner qu’il joue ce soir.

En 1888, lorsqu’il composa sa Cinquième Symphonie, Tchaïkovski était au sommet de son art. Un même thème – une sorte d’« idée fixe » qui rappelle le leitmotiv sur lequel se fonde la Symphonie fantastique de Berlioz – revient dans les quatre mouvements. Beaucoup y voient la manifestation du destin, mais « alors que dans la Cinquième Symphonie de Beethoven, le destin frappe à la porte, dans la Cinquième Symphonie de Tchaïkovski, il s’agit d’y échapper », comme l’a écrit un critique après avoir assisté à la première de cette Cinquième Symphonie. Le premier mouvement s’ouvre sur un andante sombre joué par les clarinettes. Juste avant la fin de ce mouvement, dans une tonalité mineure, un allegro plein d’entrain fait éclater une joie de vivre enfantine. Les premières mesures tragiques du deuxième mouvement introduisent une superbe mélodie pour cor, qui, tel un rayon de soleil, vient percer cette sombre couverture nuageuse. Le troisième mouvement est une valse sur laquelle le destin n’a que peu de prise. Dans le quatrième mouvement, le thème central ressurgit, mais en tonalité majeure – avant de terminer en apothéose sur une marche triomphale.

FATE TRYING TO ESCAPE

Coriolanus was a Roman patrician who tried to become consul after several military successes. When this failed, he turned against Rome. He made an alliance with a hostile people and laid siege to his own home town. At the height of the battle, Rome sent a group of women to Coriolanus to negotiate, including his own wife and his mother. In the stage overture that Beethoven wrote for Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s tragedy Coriolanus, Coriolanus’ gentlemanly nature clashes with his mother’s cantilenic pleas.

The Belgian pianist Florian Noack likes to present lesser-known works to the public, to great acclaim. In this concert he performs the First Piano Concerto by the Russian composer Nikolai Medtner, a contemporary and friend of Rachmaninoff. Like Rachmaninoff, Medtner remained true to the Western classical tradition in a turbulent era and composed virtuoso and highly romantic works. His titanic First Piano Concerto, written during the First World War, is one of Medtner’s best works. Nikolai Medtner will also record this piano concerto on CD at the end of this season with the Belgian National Orchestra conducted by Antony Hermus.

Tchaikovsky wrote his Fifth Symphony in 1888, at the height of his artistic powers. A theme - a kind of ‘idée fixe’ after Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique - appears in all four movements. Many interpret this theme as fate, but “if Beethoven’s Fifth is Fate knocking at the door,” wrote a critic right after the premiere, “Tchaikovsky’s Fifth is Fate trying to get out”. The first movement begins with a sombre andante, played by the clarinets. But before this movement ends in a minor key, a childlike joy of life emerges in a lively allegro. The tragic opening bars of the second movement introduce a beautiful horn melody, which suddenly breaks through the gloomy cloud cover like a ray of sunshine. The third movement is a waltz over which fate has little control. In the fourth movement the theme reappears, this time in the major - finally culminating in a triumphant march.
