In “The Damned and the Saved”, the composer Malin Bång and Pat To Yan, in-house author at NTM in the 2021/22 season, focus on the friendship of two women in their work together. In an unspecified repressive system, a machine rules as king, which is fed with garbage left behind after demonstrations. This is used for meticulous follow-up and provides information on entire biographies, which can then be switched off. The friends try to assert themselves against this totalitarian violence and choose different ways of resistance. This puts their relationship to the test, as Dana radically confronts herself and those around her with the rule of injustice, while Sara pursues a quieter revolution.

In his first libretto, Pat To Yan negotiates the question of how unconditional resistance must be in a metaphorical-simile and at the same time brutally concrete. In his text, levels of reality and dreams shift, which congenially merge through the music.

The music of the Swedish composer Malin Bång creates a cosmos full of surprising and contrasting sounds that range from restrained intimacy to stubborn sharpness. Her composition continues the rhythm and melody of Pat To Yan's libretto and creates both connections and boundaries between the worlds of experience of the two protagonists.
