"The Diary of Anne Frank. White Rose" is a play about the fate of young people whose lives were tragically cut short during the Second World War. The heroes of the chamber operas “The Diary of Anne Frank” by Grigory Fried (1969) and “The White Rose” by Udo Zimmerman (1986) are real people who did not know each other in life. “Anne Frank and Sophie Scholl never met. But on stage, their stories develop in parallel, and the heroines themselves become friends who go into death together” (Hans-Joachim Frei).

The first (concert) performance of Grigory Frid's mono-opera “The Diary of Anne Frank” took place on May 17, 1972 in Moscow at the House of Composers of the USSR, arranged for soprano and piano (solo by Nadezhda Yureneva). The composer had to wait another five years for the premiere of the work in the orchestral version: it took place in 1977 in Kislovodsk. The title role was performed by Anna Soboleva, she was “accompanied” by an orchestra conducted by Leonid Shulman. The first stage performances took place abroad - in the USA, Israel and the Netherlands. In 1985, the opera was staged for the first time on the Russian stage - at the Voronezh Opera and Ballet Theater. The long-awaited Moscow premiere took place on the stage of the B. A. Pokrovsky Chamber Theater only in 2010. Ekaterina Vasileva’s production entered the theater’s repertoire and was nominated for the Golden Mask award. The opera’s path to the domestic audience was slow and difficult, the reason for which was the Holocaust, which was not accepted to be discussed on the stage in the Soviet Union.

The libretto is based on the diary of the Jewish girl Anne Frank, who, together with her family, hid from the Nazis for several years in the attic of one of the Amsterdam houses. A few months before the end of the war, fifteen-year-old Anna died of typhus in a German concentration camp. The diary tells about the events of the war, growing anxiety, loss of life, family relationships in conditions of isolation and a nascent love feeling for a neighbor’s boy - and its lines “sound” with the amazing power and reliability inherent in documentary evidence. The Russian-language text is based on the translation of “The Diary” made by Rita Wright-Kovalyova. The musical style of the opera is laconic and intonationally flexible - the young heroine’s story about the events she experiences does not allow for verbose “argumentation”.

Udo Zimmermann's opera The White Rose was first performed on June 17, 1967 at the Dresden Conservatory. Several decades later, on February 27, 1986, the troupe of the Hamburg State Opera presented its second (chamber) edition. In this version, the opera attracted the attention of the largest theaters and music festivals in the world: it was staged in Vienna, Berlin, Zurich, Salzburg...

The libretto is based on the story of the Nazi resistance group White Rose (1942–1943), formed by students at the University of Munich. The opera's characters Sophie and Hans Scholl went from members of the Hitler Youth to members of an anti-fascist organization and were executed for distributing leaflets calling for an uprising. The opera tells about the last hours of their lives before execution by the guillotine, filled with memories, anxiety, visions... The contrasts of numbness and despair are conveyed by an extremely expressive sound language, interspersed from time to time with allusions and quotes from music of other eras and styles: salon waltzes, military marches, works by Heinrich Schütz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Franz Schubert, Gustav Mahler, Alban Berg...

On May 6, 2021, both operas were presented in one evening on the Chamber Stage of the Bolshoi Theater. The ideas of the production director of the play, world-famous director Hans-Joachim Frey, are read clearly and clearly. Its atmosphere is formed by newsreels of the 1930s-1940s, gray walls, coats and military overcoats, railway sleepers leading to the death camp, a teddy bear and the suddenly opened blue sky above (production designer Pyotr Okunev). The destinies of the heroes who remain young forever, embodied in two stories - in Russian and German - converge this evening in one stage space, at one point in history.

«Дневник Анны Франк. Белая роза» — спектакль о судьбах молодых людей, чья жизнь трагически оборвалась во время Второй мировой войны. Герои камерных опер «Дневник Анны Франк» Григория Фрида (1969) и «Белая роза» Удо Циммермана (1986) — реальные люди, которые в жизни не знали друг друга. «Анна Франк и Софи Шоль никогда не встречались. Первое (концертное) исполнение монооперы Григория Фрида «Дневник Анны Франк» состоялось 17 мая 1972 года в Москве в Доме композиторов СССР в переложении для сопрано и фортепиано (солировала Надежда Юренева). Премьеры сочинения в оркестровом варианте композитору пришлось ждать ещё пять лет: она прошла в 1977 году в Кисловодске. Заглавную партию исполняла Анна Соболева, ей «аккомпанировал» оркестр под управлением Леонида Шульмана. Первые сценические исполнения состоялись за границей — в США, Израиле и Нидерландах. В 1985 году опера впервые была поставлена на русской сцене — в Воронежском театре оперы и балета. Долгожданная московская премьера состоялась на сцене Камерного театра имени Б. А. Покровского лишь в 2010 году. Постановка Екатерины Василёвой вошла в репертуар театра и была номинирована на премию «Золотая маска». Путь оперы к отечественному слушателю был небыстрым и непростым, причиной чему стал Холокост, говорить о котором с театральных подмостков в Советском Союзе было не принято.

В основе либретто — дневник еврейской девочки Анны Франк, вместе со своей семьёй несколько лет скрывавшейся от нацистов на чердаке одного из амстердамских домов. За несколько месяцев до конца войны пятнадцатилетняя Анна умерла от тифа в немецком концентрационном лагере. Дневник повествует о событиях войны, нарастающей тревоге, гибели людей, семейных отношениях в условиях изоляции и зарождающемся любовном чувстве к соседскому мальчику — и его строки «звучат» с поразительной силой и достоверностью, присущей документальным свидетельствам. Русскоязычный текст основан на переводе «Дневника», сделанном Ритой Райт-Ковалёвой. Музыкальный стиль оперы лаконичен и интонационно гибок — рассказ юной героини о переживаемых событиях не допускает многословной «аргументации».

Опера Удо Циммермана «Белая роза» была впервые исполнена 17 июня 1967 года в Дрезденской консерватории. Через несколько десятилетий, 27 февраля 1986 года, труппа Гамбургской государственной оперы представила её вторую (камерную) редакцию. В этом варианте опера привлекла к себе внимание крупнейших театров и музыкальных фестивалей мира: она ставилась в Вене, Берлине, Цюрихе, Зальцбурге...

Либретто основано на истории группы сопротивления нацистам «Белая роза» (1942–1943), образованной студентами Мюнхенского университета. Герои оперы Софи и Ханс Шоль прошли путь от членов Гитлерюгенда до участников антифашисткой организации и были казнены за распространение листовок, призывающих к восстанию. Опера повествует о последних часах их жизни перед казнью на гильотине, наполненных воспоминаниями, тревогой, видениями… Контрасты оцепенения и отчаяния передаёт чрезвычайно экспрессивный звуковой язык, вкраплениями в который время от времени всплывают аллюзии и цитаты из музыки других эпох и стилей: салонных вальсов, военных маршей, сочинений Генриха Шютца, Иоганна Себастьяна Баха, Франца Шуберта, Густава Малера, Альбана Берга…

6 мая 2021 года обе оперы были представлены в один вечер на Камерной сцене Большого театра. Идеи режиссёра-постановщика спектакля, всемирно известного режиссёра Ханса-Йоахима Фрая, читаются отчётливо и ясно. Его атмосферу образуют кинохроника 1930-1940-х, серые стены, пальто и военные шинели, железнодорожные шпалы, ведущие в лагерь смерти, плюшевый медвежонок и внезапно открывшееся синее небо над головами (художник-постановщик Пётр Окунев). Судьбы оставшихся навсегда молодыми героев, воплощённые в двух сюжетах — на русском и немецком языках, — сходятся в этот вечер в одном сценическом пространстве, в одной точке истории.
