The first Festival Academy Orchestra concert is always a special occasion. After months of preparations, auditions, and then a few days of rehearsals, the orchestra and I take the stage with a huge sense of anticipation. Alongside Brahms’ majestic and much loved third symphony I have programmed 2 rather neglected works; Beethoven’s Consecration of the House Overture, which was commissioned for the reopening of Vienna’s Theater in der Josef Stadt in Vienna in 1822, and Elgar’s Violin Concerto written for the great violinist Fritz Kreisler who once said: “If you want to know whom I consider to be the greatest living composer, I say without hesitation Elgar... I place him on an equal footing with my idols, Beethoven and Brahms.”
