Křiček's opera illustrates the great popularity of Oscar Wilde's the Ghost of Canterville. Wilde contrasted the lifestyle of modern Americans with the departing customs of a "happy English home," as represented by the ancient castle that the American envoy buys with an age-old ghost. The environment in the opera changed (Czechoslovakia after the First World War), the authors also added a topical topic at that time: the practice of land offices. The plot also included a love affair between the Count of the Castle in Satalice Jiří and the daughter of the American envoy Elinor. Křička used the popular methods of so-called time operas (dance forms of entertaining music of the 20s, jazz, revue style, film projection), but the resulting shape resembled an operetta in which an equally important place fell to folk chants and waltz rhythms.
The premiere of the opera took place on 27 November 1929 in Brno under the direction of conductor Antonín Balatka. In the National Theatre we present it in a revised version for German theatres; it was first performed in Wrocław in November 1931. The author of the text adaptation was Max Brod, a Prague German writer who, among other things, contributed to the international promotion of the work of Franz Kafka, Jaroslav Hašek and Leoš Janáček. Ostrava audiences could get acquainted with this opera the following year in a musical production by Jaroslav Vogel.
