He was the author of popular jazz standards like »Lady Be Good« and »I Got Rhythm«. But how did such George Gershwin classics really sound like in the 1930s? Up to now, Anima Eterna Brugge has focused on the original sounds of many different eras, but in the past few years has concentrated on more contemporary works by composers such as Maurice Ravel, Hector Berlioz and George Gershwin. To mark its 30th anniversary, the ensemble together with soprano Yeree Suh venture into the world of showbiz for the first time – playing instruments from the era when the music originated. Pianist Frank Braley plays a Steinway grand piano from 1906 that Gershwin most probably played on himself.

Populäre Jazz-Standards wie »Lady be good« und »I got Rhythm« stammen aus seiner Feder. Aber wie klangen George Gershwins Klassiker in den 1930er Jahren wirklich? Bisher hat Anima Eterna Brugge dem Originalklang vieler Epochen nachgespürt, sich aber in den letzten Jahren verstärkt auf jüngere Komponisten wie Maurice Ravel, Hector Berlioz und eben George Gershwin konzentriert. Zum 30-jährigen Jubiläum wagt das Ensemble zusammen mit der Sopranistin Yeree Suh erstmals einen Vorstoß in Richtung Showbiz – auf Instrumenten der Werkentstehungszeit. Pianist Frank Braley spielt dabei auf einem Steinway-Flügel von 1906, den Gershwin vielleicht sogar selbst gespielt hat.
