When Maria is released from prison, she returns to her sister Martha. Martha runs a home for unemployed and homeless women that lives on donations and small miracles. The home is also home to a group of activists led by a man named Jesus. Martha blames her sister Maria for not helping out with the hard work around the house anymore. When their brother Lazarus dies in front of them while a riot rages outside, the two sisters' points of view and beliefs are put to the test.

Focusing on the marginalized perspectives of Mary Magdalene and Martha, The Gospel According to the Other Mary places biblical characters and events, including the resurrection of Lazarus and the Passion of Christ, in a strongly political, contemporary light.

Als Maria aus dem Gefängnis entlassen wird, kehrt sie zu ihrer Schwester Martha zurück. Martha leitet ein Heim für arbeitslose und obdachlose Frauen, das von Spenden und kleinen Wundern lebt. Das Heim beherbergt auch eine Gruppe von Aktivisten, die von einem Mann namens Jesus angeführt wird. Martha macht ihrer Schwester Maria Vorwürfe, weil sie nicht mehr mithilft, die harte Arbeit im Haus zu bewältigen.
