Der Name dieses Jungen war in den Schnee geschrieben, die Sonne ging auf, der Schnee schmolz und trug seinen Namen in den Wassern davon.

Priester Grigoris beruft den Ältestenrat des Dorfes Lykovrissi ein und wählt aus den Dorfbewohnern die Darsteller Christi und der Apostel für ein Passionsspiel aus. Doch der tiefe Frieden, in dem das Dorf bislang lebte, wird plötzlich gestört. Als ob der Finger Gottes einen Glaubensbeweis verlange, erscheinen auf dem Dorfplatz Flüchtlinge aus einer geplünderten und aufgegebenen Ortschaft und bitten um Asyl. Sie treffen auf vehemente Ablehnung und sind gezwungen, sich in den felsigen Bergen eine  Zuflucht zu suchen. Doch die neu ernannten Heiligen stellen den verängstigten Flüchtlingen nach. Die gewöhnlichen Alltagssorgen dieser Menschen verschwinden nach und nach; die Stärke ihres Glaubens und ihre Rollen in den näherrückenden Passionsspielen beginnen ihr spirituelles Bewusstsein zu verändern und lassen sie eine neue Reife erreichen. Alle Männer und Frauen finden allmählich zum einzigen Sinn ihres Handelns zurück: zum Guten oder zum Bösen… So charakterisierte Bohuslav Martinů seine letzte Oper, die auf dem Roman Der wiedergekreuzigte Christus des griechischen Schriftstellers Nikos Kazantzakis basiert. Martinů, der selbst das Schicksal eines Flüchtlings erlebt hatte, hinterließ in seinem Werk die große humanistische Botschaft von der Kraft des Glaubens. Eine Botschaft, die in der heutigen Welt aktueller denn je ist. Nach der Oper Marienspiele und dem Oratorium Das Gilgamesch-Epos kehrt mit der Griechischen Passion ein weiteres Werk Martinůs mit einem schönen und umfangreichen Chorpart auf die Bühne des Janáček-Theaters zurück.

Zvon v nedostavěném chrámu, voda jako symbol očisty, hořící svíce… Červená vajíčka se rozdávají jako symbol Velikonoc. Náhle z dálky zazní zoufalé hlasy. V průzračných, téměř snových obrazech se začíná odehrávat velké drama o tom, co se skrývá v člověku.

Kněz Grigoris svolává shromáždění stařešinů vsi Lycovrissi a vybírá z řad vesničanů Krista a apoštoly pro pašijové hry. Hluboký mír, ve kte­rém ves dosud žila, je narušen náhlým otřesem. Tak jako prst Boží po­žaduje důkaz víry, přicházejí na náves běženci a žádají o azyl. Jsou odmítnuti a donuceni hledat si útočiště ve skalnatých horách. Avšak nově jmenovaní svatí jdou za strachujícími se uprchlíky. Běžné denní starosti se postup­ně vytrácejí; síla jejich víry a jejich role v blížících se pašijích začínají měnit jejich duchovní vědomí do nové zralosti. Postupně se vrací k jedinému smyslu svého konání: dobru, nebo zlu…

Tak charakterizoval Martinů svou poslední operu Řecké pašije. Skladatel, který sám zažil osud uprchlíka, v ní vytvořil dílo velkého humanistického poselství o síle víry. Poselství v dnešním světě stále více aktuální.

The boy’s name was written into the snow. When the sun came out, the snow melted and his name was carried away by the water.

The priest Grigoris has summoned a meeting of the elders in the village of Lycovrissi and the villagers are being selected to play Christ and Apostles in the local passion plays when the deep peace in which the villagers have dwelt so far is disturbed by a sudden shock. Just as if the finger of God has appeared to demand proof of faith, refugees arrive from a pillaged and deserted village and ask for asylum. They are angrily refused and forced to seek shelter in the rocky mountains nearby. However, the newly appointed saints take it upon themselves to go to the worried refugees. The common daily worries of these people gradually fade away; the power of their faith and their roles in the approaching passion plays begin to transform their spiritual awareness into a new maturity. Every man and woman gradually realizes the only true meaning of one’s actions:  are they good, or evil…? This is how Bohuslav Martinů characterized his last opera The Greek Passion, which was inspired by the novel Christ Recrucified by the Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis. The composer, who had also experienced the trials and tribulations of a refugee, created a work with a great humanistic message about the power of faith – a message which is more and more topical in today´s world. After the opera The Miracles of Mary and the oratorio The Epic of Gilgamesh, Martinů returns to the Janáček Theatre stage with another piece, this time featuring a beautiful and extensive choral part, The Greek Passion.
