The story of Peter Maxwell Davies' chamber opera is based on a true story: after the crew of the lighthouse on a remote island in north-west Scotland disappeared without a trace, the court tries to solve the mystery of their disappearance. This oppressive story is reconstructed on stage over the short period of just under one and a half hours. Since the historical truth could actually never be fathomed, the composer embarks on a mystical journey into the human subconscious and enigmatically paints the last hours of the lives of three lighthouse keepers who have disappeared in music. The abysses of the human soul find their musical expression in the sounds of northern sea storms and floods, while the ghosts of the repressed past are brought to light through English folk tunes. Commissioned by the Edinburgh Festival in 1980, »The Lighthouse« represents a masterful continuation of the tradition of Benjamin Britten's ghost opera »The Turn of the Screw« as a chamber play for three singers and twelve instrumentalists.

Eine wahre Begebenheit liegt der Handlung der Kammeroper von Peter Maxwell Davies zugrunde: Nachdem die Besatzung des Leuchtturms auf einer abgelegenen Insel im Nordwesten von Schottland spurlos verschwunden ist, versucht das Gericht, das Geheimnis ihres Verschwindens aufzuklären. Diese beklemmende Geschichte wird über die kurze Zeitspanne von knapp eineinhalb Stunden auf der Bühne rekonstruiert. Da die historische Wahrheit tatsächlich nie ergründet werden konnte, begibt sich der Komponist auf eine mystische Reise in das menschliche Unterbewusstsein und malt die letzten Stunden aus dem Leben dreier verschwundener Leuchtturmwärter enigmatisch in Musik aus. Abgründe der menschlichen Seele finden ihren musikalischen Ausdruck in den Klängen nordischer Meeresstürme und -fluten, während die Gespenster verdrängter Vergangenheit durch englische Volksmelodien zum Vorschein kommen. Als Auftragskomposition des Edinburgh Festival 1980 stellt »The Lighthouse« als Kammerspiel für drei Sänger und zwölf Instrumentalist*innen eine meisterhafte Fortsetzung der Tradition der Gespensteroper »The Turn of the Screw« von Benjamin Britten dar.
