Like hardly any other opera, this work by Jonathan Dove, premiered in 2015, offers opportunities to take part in a professional opera performance: be it as a singer in a choir together on a stage with the soloists and the choir of the Wuppertal Opera. Or as a young musician in interaction with the members of the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra.

In terms of content, the work is based on the Greek myth of the young Theseus, who was sent to Crete by the Athenians as a sacrifice to the Minotaur in order to appease him. But Theseus does not embark on the dangerous journey into the labyrinth to sacrifice himself, but to free Athens from this monster. The director Marie-Ève ​​Signeyrole vividly links the ancient myth with the current topic of refugee fates in the Mediterranean region. With the simplest and at the same time effective means, she succeeds in giving the distant ancient myth the greatest topicality and urgency. At the same time we experience the gripping work of one of the currently leading English composers with his easily grasped, highly emotional musical language.

Wie kaum eine andere Oper bietet dieses 2015 uraufgeführte Werk von Jonathan Dove Möglichkeiten des Mitmachens bei einer professionellen Opernaufführung: Sei es als Sänger im Chor gemeinsam auf einer Bühne mit den Solisten und dem Chor der Oper Wuppertal. Oder als junger Musiker im Zusammenspiel mit den Mitgliedern des Wuppertaler Sinfonieorchesters.

Inhaltlich fußt das Werk auf dem griechischen Mythos um den jungen Theseus, der von den Athenern als Opfer für Minotaurus nach Kreta geschickt wird, um diesen friedlich zu stimmen. Aber Theseus begibt sich nicht auf die gefährliche Reise ins Labyrinth, um sich zu opfern sondern um Athen von diesem Ungeheuer zu befreien. Die Regisseurin Marie-Ève Signeyrole verknüpft den antiken Mythos auf eindringliche Weise mit dem aktuellen Thema von Flüchtlingsschicksalen im Mittelmeerraum. Mit einfachsten und gleichzeitig effektvollen Mitteln, gelingt es ihr, dem entfernten antiken Mythos größte Aktualität und Dringlichkeit zu verleihen. Gleichzeitig erleben wir das packende Werk eines der derzeit führenden englischen Komponisten mit seiner leicht aufzufassenden, hochemotionalen Musiksprache.
