A special insight into the Making of Edward Clug's "The Nutcracker" which will premiere on November 25th 2022. 

With its Christmas setting and Peter Tchaikovsky's glorious music, The Nutcracker is one of the most famous and beloved ballets in the international repertoire. The Stuttgart Ballet has - surprisingly - not performed a full-length version of this classical ballet for over 50 years. Artistic Director Tamas Detrich has therefore commissioned a spectacular new production from the internationally acclaimed choreographer Edward Clug with sets and costumes by the legendary designer Jürgen Rose. Using E.T.A. Hoffmann's fantastical short story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” as their inspiration, Clug and Rose newly interpret this marvelous classic.

The Making of Edward Clug's "The Nutcracker"

With its Christmas story and Peter Tchaikovsky's grandiose music, The Nutcracker is one of the most famous and popular ballets in the international repertoire. Surprisingly, the Stuttgart Ballet has not performed the classic narrative ballet for over 50 years. Although John Cranko published his own version in 1966, it was never written down and was lost. Ballet director Tamas Detrich is now closing this gap with a spectacular new production by the internationally sought-after choreographer Edward Clug in a set designed by the legendary stage and costume designer Jürgen Rose. This new version of the large-scale narrative ballet also offers many beautiful roles for children: a perfect opportunity to involve the young talents of the John Cranko School.


ETA Hoffmann's imaginative literary source provides Edward Clug and Jürgen Rose with plenty of material for inspiration and interpretation. One thing is certain: this enchanting family ballet for young and old is perfect for the Christmas season.

Der Nussknacker gehört mit seiner weihnachtlichen Geschichte und Peter Tschaikowskys grandioser Musik zu den berühmtesten und beliebtesten Balletten des internationalen Repertoires. Das Stuttgarter Ballett hat – erstaunlicherweise – seit über 50 Jahren das klassische Handlungsballett nicht mehr aufgeführt. John Cranko hatte zwar eine eigene Version im Jahr 1966 herausgebracht, diese wurde aber nie notiert und ging verloren. Ballettintendant Tamas Detrich schließt nun diese Lücke mit einer spektakulären Neuproduktion des international gefragten Choreographen Edward Clug in einer Ausstattung des legendären Bühnen- und Kostümbildners Jürgen Rose. Auch diese Neufassung des groß angelegten Handlungsballetts bietet viele schöne Rollen für Kinder: eine perfekte Gelegenheit, die jungen Talente der John Cranko Schule mit einzubinden.


E.T.A. Hoffmanns fantasievolle literarische Vorlage liefert Edward Clug und Jürgen Rose reichlich Stoff zur Inspiration und für Interpretationen. Eines ist gewiss: Dieses bezaubernde Familienballett für Groß und Klein ist perfekt für die Weihnachtszeit.
