The world of this "Nutcracker" was created by the artist Mikhail Shemyakin. Shemyakin not only drew sketches of costumes and scenery, he came up with images of characters, dictated to the choreographer the nature of their plasticity, and all the bizarre transformations of this theatrical fairy tale are the fruit of his imagination. In the colorful phantasmagoria of Shemyakin's performance, inhabited by masks with long noses - either people or mice, the drama and anxiety of Tchaikovsky's score are emphasized. In this ballet, inspired by Hoffmann's whimsical fantasies, there is no place for quiet family comfort and the usual harmony of classical dance - in the pre-holiday bustle, rats are operating in the kitchen, tasting cheeses and sausages prepared for the Christmas table, and flies and bees are flying in the sweet shop. “The atmosphere of a good, cozy and “delicious” burgher life” was presented by the artist with the meticulousness of a diligent documentary filmmaker – not a single kitchen trifle, be it ladles or skimmers, garlands of garlic or ribs of a carcass suspended among utensils, is not deprived of the artist’s attention. And the viewer does not have to be bored for a moment - considering the touching details of the props, scenery and costumes, the child will rejoice at the recognition of familiar objects, and the adult will smile at their use, sometimes unexpected for a children's fairy tale. “The task of the new production of The Nutcracker,” says Shemyakin, “is to return the Hoffmannian spirit to the tale with elements of grotesque humor, oddities and reincarnations; combine the pictorial part with the musical drama of Tchaikovsky. And in some way to resurrect Petipa's original libretto, distorted and forgotten over time. Usually, plush mice in numerous productions are not able to arouse either fear or sympathy in a modern child. Starting from the 1920s, mice were replaced by rats (in particular, Fyodor Lopukhov turned Hoffmann's Myshilda and her son into rats), because their behavior both in a fairy tale and in ballet resembles more the behavior of rats, these strange and mysterious creatures . Мир этого «Щелкунчика» создан художником Михаилом Шемякиным. Шемякин не только рисовал эскизы костюмов и декораций, он придумывал образы персонажей, диктовал хореографу характер их пластики, и все причудливые превращения этой театральной сказки – плод его фантазии. В красочной фантасмагории шемякинского спектакля, населенного масками с длинными носами – не то людьми, не то мышами, подчеркивается драматизм, тревожность партитуры Чайковского. В этом балете, вдохновленном причудливыми гофмановскими фантазиями, нет места тихому семейному уюту и привычной гармонии классического танца – в предпраздничной суете на кухне орудуют крысы, пробуя сыры и колбасы, приготовленные для рождественского стола, а в лавке сластей летают мухи и пчелы. «Обстановку добротного уютного и "вкусного" бюргерского быта» художник представил с дотошностью старательного документалиста – ни одна кухонная мелочь, будь то поварешки или шумовки, гирлянды чеснока или ребра подвешенной среди утвари туши, не обделена вниманием художника. И зрителю ни на мгновение не приходится скучать – рассматривая трогательные подробности бутафории, декораций и костюмов, ребенок порадуется узнаванию знакомых предметов, а взрослый улыбнется порой неожиданному для детской сказки их использованию. «Задача новой постановки "Щелкунчика", – говорит Шемякин, – вернуть сказке гофмановский дух с элементами гротескного юмора, странностями и перевоплощениями; соединить изобразительную часть с музыкальным драматизмом Чайковского. И в чем-то воскресить оригинальное либретто Петипа, со временем искаженное и подзабытое. Обычно плюшевые мышата в многочисленных постановках не в состоянии вызвать у современного ребенка ни страха, ни симпатии. Уже начиная с 1920-х годов, мыши были заменены на крыс (в частности, у Федора Лопухова гофмановские Мышильда и ее сын превращены в крыс), ибо их поведение и в сказке, и в балете напоминает больше поведение крыс, этих странных и загадочных существ.
