The girl Anne and the young man Tom are in love. But Anne's father urges Tom to earn a solid living. But he wants to give himself up entirely to luck and his whims of the moment. First of all, he wants money. Then the devil appears, who makes Tom believe that he is now the wealthy heir. The plot is inspired by three of Tom's wishes

With his most extensive work Rake's Progress , The Stravinsky created his only full-length opera in 1951. And just as he came to the aesthetic conclusion in lectures in 1939/1940 that tradition had to be renewed in order to create something new, in 1951 he was not only inspired by satirical engravings from the 18th century by the English copper engraver William Hogarth, but also by one whole series of well-known opera music from Monteverdi to Tchaikovsky - primarily from Mozart's Così fan tutte .

Look forward to a new Trier production of this rapid rise and deep fall of Tom Rakewell, who gambles away his money, has affairs with women, ruins himself and those around him and finally ends up in a psychiatric ward. Congenially set to music with devilish pleasure by Stravinsky, whose neoclassical phase found its conclusion and climax with this work.
